Historic Garden Care Volunteer

Main objectives

  • To help care for the garden, research garden history and engage people with it

  • Teamworking, learning new skills, sharing skills, improved physical fitness and mental wellbeing

Tasks and activities

  • Weeding, watering and general gardening.

  • Art & cultural works inspired by the plants and garden

  • Research to inform/develop information boards

  • Other initiatives as identified during the project

  • Active participation in “immersion events” as appropriate

Stanwick Lakes, Stanwick, Northamptonshire, NN9 6GY

Work hours

Usually Tuesdays between 11am and 2pm (this may increase or vary as the garden becomes more established and the number of volunteers increases)

Skills/attributes/experience desired

A willingness to work together to learn new skills and help others to learn

Training provided?

  • Informal on-the-job training given to volunteers through ad-hoc workshops

  • Health & safety briefings given to volunteers as required – especially in the use of tools

  • Volunteers are also given the opportunity to attend in-house / Trading Places craft courses, e.g. mosaics, basket weaving

Any other relevant information

  • We range in age from 19 to 65+ and in gardening knowledge and experience

  • We keep in touch with our volunteers via WhatsApp and email, so that volunteers keep up to date with progress and know when work sessions are taking place.

  • Although it’s better if volunteers attend every week – this isn’t always possible, so that some volunteers just join in when they can
